Big BerthaI finally picked up a new TV the other day. After weeks of endless research, I finally settled on...well, nothing. My budget was much too low, and my standard for picture quality much too high. But then while I was at Best Buy scoping out some possibilities, I spotted an amazing deal on the 34" Sony XBR HDTV Wega. Big thanks to Leo and Eric for dropping by on short notice to help me take away this 200 pound CRT behemoth (and for holding on when we almost dropped it in the elevator).

Comcast certainly doesn't advertise the fact that you can pull in every single major broadcaster in high-def digital over their "analog basic cable" without paying for a set-top box + HD service. Lost looks amazing in 720p resolution.

Now, to wait for Apple's rumoured Mac Mini DVR to replace my aging Power Mac G4 (in addition to building my own MCE, of course...!).

Are you sure you are really getting HD or are you just one of these suckers from a recent survey...

* Close to one in four (28%) of HDTV owners reported that they did not get any special equipment from their service provider to watch HDTV channels because the picture quality was already improved with the purchase of an HDTV.

* 23% of HDTV owners did not invest in special equipment to watch HDTV channels because a message at the beginning of the programs they watch tells them that those programs are being broadcast in HD.

* Nearly one in five (18%) reported that they believed the HD television would give them high-definition channels without additional equipment.

Haha Eric. And yeah, it's crazy to see Apple so focused on their home entertainment strategy.

And JL, yeah, I saw that survey; I think it's probably flawed. Reason being that most HD TVs sold nowadays have QAM tuners built in, which means that you CAN display HD without additional equipment, like me. (Though perhaps the survey does include QAM tuners in their list of "special equipment.")

I'm sure the basic conclusion of the survey is still true, though: Many people buy HD TVs but aren't aware they need to do more to get HD service.

And yes, I'm sure that I'm actually displaying HD. :)

In my experience here in KW the 'extra' channels that people find they get are just digital package channels. You do have an HD Tuner though so it is entirely possible that you've got HD channels. You'd obviously be better equipped to tell since you're there. There are probably a lot of over air HD Channels in Seattle too...

I'm planning on getting the Panasonic 42PD50 this spring and I can't wait to wall mount it hooked up to my 360.

And yeah. That tv is damn heavy. Kev and I always hate moving those guys around. Though why didn't you put it down in the elevator?
